Dog – Sailor Bulldogs Smoking

Categories Figural - Animals & Living Creatures
Type dog
Material Pot metal
Manufacturer Undetermined
Origin Undetermined
Date or Era circa 1900
Measuring 2 ¼” x 2 ¾” x 4”

Figural, hand-painted inkwells featuring Bulldogs dressed as sailors. Sporting sailor’s cap and collar, one is smoking a pipe, the other a cigar.

These Bulldogs are similar to several identical-looking bulldogs in different costumes and poses, primarily dressed as sailors and smoking a pipe or cigar. Some attribute these to Georg Heyde & Company in Dresden, Germany, but this has never been confirmed. Possibly they’re Austrian, given their anthropomorphic whimsey. Or, because of the Bulldog and sailing theme, maybe they are British.
