This white metal polychrome inkstand in the form of an Oriental rug features a recumbent leopard. The tasseled pillow with a hinged cover opens to the inkwell. Stamped on the underside: “Trade Mark Coronet Registered Austria.”
Also on the underside, written in pencil in English: “Painted by J.G. Coffman / Mar. 1932”. The base of this inkstand – the Oriental rug with tasseled pillow – is seen with other iterations: a carpet seller, a pipe smoker, and a snake charmer to name three. I’ve always dated these to around 1910 – 1920 and attribute the 1932 date as a repainting of the original.
Estimated value: $125 – Sold for $345 in June 2025
