Young Scribe Double Inkstand

This figural double inkstand dates to approximately 1890–1910.

Materials and Construction

The inkstand is made of cast spelter (also known as white metal or régule in French). Spelter was a popular and more affordable alternative to bronze during the late 19th century. It was typically finished with an “oxidized silver” or “French silver” patina, which explains the grayish-silver tone and the way the finish has darkened or worn in the recessed areas. It has its original ceramic inserts.

Design and Motif

• The Figure: The central figure is a “Young Scribe” or “Student” (often referred to in French sets as Le Petit Scribe). This was a very popular allegorical motif in the Beaux-Arts and Academic styles of the era, symbolizing literacy and scholarly pursuits.
• The Backplate: The ornate, pierced scrollwork backplate features “C-scrolls” and “S-scrolls” with stylized floral elements, characteristic of the Rococo Revival influence that was prevalent just before the cleaner lines of Art Nouveau took over.
• The Base: The front features a shield-shaped cartouche (plaque), which was intentionally left blank by the manufacturer so that the owner could have it engraved with a name or a presentation date. The pen tray itself has a distinctive repeating geometric star/flower pattern in circles, which was a common design cue for turn-of-the-century desk accessories.
