This commemorative inkstand is a tribute to the fallen inWorld War I, featuring a detailed figure of a soldier in uniform. The soldier is seated. Flanking the soldier are two dome-shaped covers resembling military helmets, which serve as the lids for the inkwells. The base of the inkstand bears the inscription “Sr de VIMY,” referring to Vimy, a significant location during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The underside is marked “Made in France” and “509”.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge, fought from April 9 to April 12, 1917, was a major engagement primarily involving the Canadian Corps against the German Sixth Army. This battle was a defining moment for Canadian forces during World War I, as they successfully captured the ridge, which had been heavily fortified by the Germans. The victory at Vimy Ridge is often seen as a symbol of national pride and achievement for Canada.
