Wooden inkstands such as with the three examples pictured here were made from different woods and in different styles. Some even had a storage drawer below. All feature three compartments with hinged covers, each labeled for the type of ink held: “Red”, “Black”, and “Copy”. “Copy” ink was a lower-quality ink, often used for unofficial purposes. It was more affordable and not suitable for official documents. Each inkstand had an area to hold pens. Many were equipped with a glass pen tray.
These inkstands were likely used in an office or commercial context where correspondence, record-keeping, and document duplication were essential tasks. It’s believed they are English in origin.
These inkstands sell in the $50 to $100 range. The first inkstand pictured sold for $64 in May 2024
