The inkstand is made of a dark, rich wood with a prominent, swirling grain, characteristic of walnut. It features a central, looped brass handle for easy transport. The top surface holds two matching, cut glass inkwells with brass fittings. These inkwells are recessed into the wood, and brass “prongs” secure them in place. The base also has two channels carved into the wood. A pull-out drawer in the front, fitted with a brass handle, provides a convenient space for storing stamps, nibs, or other small writing paraphernalia.

Analysis and Estimated Age

Based on the style, craftsmanship, and materials, this desk stand is likely of English origin and dates to the mid-to-late 19th century, placing it firmly within the Victorian era (c. 1850-1890).

The “Patent” Mark

The mark “PATENT” on the wood refers to a granted patent for a specific innovative feature of the design. While the term was sometimes used generically, it most often indicated that a particular mechanism was legally protected. In this case, it’s highly probable that the patent refers to the design of the brass prongs that hold the glass inkwells in place.
