This inkstand is an example of “Trompe l’œil” bronze work, designed to resemble a natural cluster of walnuts and a large leaf.
- Material and Finish: The entire piece is crafted from bronze. The surface texture mimics the rough, natural shell of walnuts and the veined surface of a real leaf.
- Form and Functionality:
- Leaf as Pen Tray: The prominent, broadly shaped leaf forms the base of the inkwell, serving as a pen tray. Its surface is detailed with realistic veins.
- Hinged Walnuts: Two realistic-looking walnuts are positioned on the leaf, both designed with hinges to open.
- One walnut, located closer to the center of the larger leaf, opens to reveal an interior compartment that contains a glass inkwell.
- The second walnut, situated further back on a smaller stem with an additional leaf, also opens. This compartment is designed for storing small writing accessories such as nibs, stamps, or other tiny desk essentials.
