Two examples are pictured.

This inkwell is constructed primarily of blown glass, featuring a distinctive design with a bulbous reservoir at the top and a downward-curved tube for dispensing ink. One example rests on a square base, the other on a round base.

  • Blown Glass Construction:
  • Reservoir: The upper section consists of a spherical or bulbous reservoir. This is where the ink would be stored.
  • Tube: A narrow, cylindrical tube extends downward from the reservoir. It features a distinct curve or bend, creating a downward-pointing spout.
  • Striped Pattern: Both the reservoir and the tube are decorated with alternating striped patterns. This pattern is likely created by incorporating colored glass rods during the blowing process.
  • Hand Blown: The slightly irregular shape and variations in the glass thickness suggest that this inkwell was hand-blown.
  • Gravity-Fed Mechanism:
  • Principle: The design utilizes gravity to regulate the flow of ink. When the ink level in the tube drops, air enters the reservoir, allowing more ink to flow down.
  • Functionality: This mechanism ensures a consistent supply of ink to the tip of the tube, making it readily available for dipping a pen.
  • Hinged: The end of the downward-curved tube is fitted with a small metal cap. This cap serves to prevent dust or debris from entering the tube and to regulate the flow of ink.
