This is literally a “two-faced” inkstand. At first look, one sees the bust of a woman. But turn it around and there’s the face of a man. I’m unable to identify the faces. They have a classical look and may represent mythological gods. The man’s face is hinged and opens to access the ink bottle inside. The piece is marked “Verlag bei E G Zimmermann Hanau”. (Manufactured by E G Zimmermann in Hanau).
The manufacturer, based in Hanau Germany was a foundry established around 1842, making a variety of metal works including chess pieces which are part of the collection at the NY Museum of Art.
