A late 19th-century tortoiseshell inkwell of circular capstan form with a hinged lid and interior glass lining with a removable glass inkwell. The inkwell has solid silver mounts embellished with pierced scrolls. The hinged lid has a central cartouche. The whole of the interior is glass-lined. The removable glass inkwell is also silver mounted. The piece is fully hallmarked with the Leopard’s head for London assay, the lion passant indicating .925 grade solid sterling silver. The date is “b” for the year 1897 and the maker’s mark “HBA” signifies J. Batson & Son (Henry John Barson & Albert Edward Batson).
