An original Tiffany price list describes the Ninth Century Pattern this way: “With its bands of carved ornament and fields deeply cut strap work, this set is one of the most elaborate. Small animals (birds, squirrels, hares) are introduced in the design as substitutes for the Ninth Century grotesque forms which are usually puzzling and unattractive. The set is finished in gold and mounted with jewels.”
