The “pine needle” pattern was one of the most popular designs produced by Tiffany Studios, in large part due to the glass component. It features green glass stained with the Favrile opalescent technique, overlaid with bronze filigree pierced with pine needles, which gives the inkwell its name. The most common finishes to the pine needle pieces are metal with a dark patina and green glass (#844 pictured) or a gold finish with caramel-colored glass (#845 pictured). The inkwell rests on four ball feet.
Tiffany made this pattern not just with inkwells, but also pen wipes, stamp boxes, calendars, paper clips, seals, blotters, letter racks, letter openers, scales, playing card case, on and on – over eighty pieces.
Pictured here are three of the varieties of inkwells with Tiffany’s pine needle pattern.
