This large version of Tiffany Studio’s bronze inkwell (#1072) with a brown patina in the Zodiac pattern has a 12-sided polygon shape with six panels depicting signs of the Zodiac alternating with six panels having an interlocking chain motif. Its hinged lid shows scales depicting Libra.

The design incorporates the figures and symbols of ancient zodiac signs. They are in low-relief and set within medallions that are framed with interwoven banding. The zodiacal figures are stylized and not placed in the order of the zodiac calendar.

Tiffany also made a version with an attached segmented pen tray. This piece is numbered #1073.

Also pictured is a rare variant with hinged side compartments to store pen nibs.

Estimated value for #1072: $400

Estimated value for # 1073: $700
