Two examples of inkwells with built-in thermometers. These were made by the Schaeffer & Budenberg Mfg. Co. in Brooklyn NY. Enclosed in a glass dome, a flag traveled around the raised dial and pointed to the temperature. In the days when households did not have air conditioning, and heating levels varied throughout the house, a thermometer inkstand, in addition to its novelty, may have been a useful feature.
For the first inkstand pictured, the inkwells have pronged lids allowing one to swivel them open while remaining attached to the base. The base is stamped P33.
The second is also a double inkstand with a more standard design with hinged lids and pen grooves.
Estimated value: $75 to $125
