This is a novelty inkstand manufactured by Messinger Buhle Company of Bethlehem, PA, featuring “The Newton” patented design. It’s crafted from cast metal with a patinated finish, showcasing a whimsical and functional approach to desk accessories.
Key Features:
- “The Newton” Barrel Inkwell: The primary ink reservoir is a cylindrical barrel marked “THE NEWTON / Pat. Pend.”
- Automated Lid and Tilting Action: A chain connects a standing figure’s hand to the barrel’s lid. Lifting the pen from the wire holder triggers the barrel to tilt forward and the lid to automatically raise, providing access to the ink.
- Multiple Ink Pots: The inkstand includes three ink pots: two smaller lidded pots in the front and the main barrel reservoir.
- Rear Fence and Owl: A removable fence-like structure at the rear, topped by an owl figure, served as a supply holder.
- Recessed Supply Trough: A recessed trough along the base provides additional storage space for pens, nibs, or other writing supplies.
- Figural Design: A standing figure, connected to the barrel mechanism, adds a whimsical touch.
- Messinger Buhle Company Plaque: A plaque on the front of the base identifies the manufacturer and their location.
