Maker and Background Information

The hallmark “WC / JL” within a shield-shaped punch belongs to William Comyns & Sons (specifically William Comyns and his sons Charles and Herbert). William Comyns was one of the most prominent and prolific silversmiths of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for high-quality decorative pieces often sold through prestigious retailers like the Goldsmiths’ Company.

  • City: London.
  • Date: 1899 (indicated by the lowercase Roman letter “d”).
  • Composition: Sterling Silver (indicated by the Lion Passant hallmark).

The Inkstand Base

The base is a heavy, oval sterling silver tray with a central mounting ring designed to secure the glass inkwell.

  • Border: The tray features a “Chippendale” style or scalloped and molded border. This multi-lobed edge is accented by a raised, scrolled rim that creates a rhythmic, wave-like silhouette.
  • Feet: The stand is elevated on four acanthus-leaf feet. Each foot is cast with detailed, scrolling foliage that flares outward to provide a stable and decorative foundation.

The Glass Inkwell

The inkwell consists of a heavy, clear-cut glass reservoir with vertical ribbing and a star-cut base. It is fitted with a hinged sterling silver lid.

Inscription and Crest

The lid is masterfully engraved with a family crest and a Latin motto:

  • Crest: The symbol depicts an arm in armor, embowed (bent at the elbow), holding a spear (or javelin). In heraldry, this represents strength, readiness, and a defensive posture.
  • Motto: “PARATUS SUM” translates from Latin to “I am ready” or “I am prepared”. This motto is traditionally associated with several families, including the Fairlies, and emphasizes a state of constant vigilance and resolve.
