This is an elegant George V period English silver inkstand, crafted in a Georgian style and dating to 1917. The rectangular form of the inkstand sits on small, rounded feet. The tray is engraved with the figure of a maiden with an anchor.
The inkstand holds a pair of inkwells and a pounce pot. The two inkwells are cylindrical with fitted. The pounce pot, used for sprinkling fine powder (pounce) onto wet ink to help it dry quickly, is the third container. It has a pierced or sifting top to allow for the controlled distribution of the pounce.
All three pieces – the two inkwells and the pounce pot – bear the hallmarks for London, the year 1917, and the maker’s mark for Crichton Brothers (specifically Lionel Alfred Crichton). Crichton Brothers were known for producing high-quality silver items, and this inkstand is a testament to their craftsmanship.
