Description of this cut glass inkwell with a sterling silver lid, fashioned in the form of a horse’s hoof:
- Overall Form: The inkwell mimics the shape of a horse’s hoof.
- Cut Glass Body: The body of the inkwell is made from clear, cut glass. It features a dense and intricate pattern of diamond-cut facets. The curved, irregular shape of the glass captures the organic contours of a hoof.
- Glass Underside: The base of the inkwell is shaped and cut to resemble the sole or “frog” area of a horse’s hoof. This is achieved through a combination of polished surfaces and deep, curved cuts.
- Sterling Silver Lid: The inkwell is topped with a sterling silver lid which is hinged and conforms to the top of the hoof-shaped glass body. A wide silver band securely fits around the rim of the glass.
- Hallmarks: The silver is hallmarked:
- London: Indicating it was assayed in London.
- 1895: Year of manufacture.
- Hukin & Heath (John Thomas Heath and John Hartshorne Middleton): Identifying the silversmiths responsible for its creation. Hukin & Heath were known for their innovative designs and high-quality work, particularly during the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts movements.
