This sterling silver desk standish, rectangular in form, has a planished finish and is embellished with bands of rivet decoration, all in the Arts and Crafts style. It is fitted with a pair of pierced decorated Arts and Crafts style handles. The body of the inkstand incorporates two square inkwells in addition to a central rectangular receptacle in the center.

The molded glass inkwells have a square rounded form. The upper portion retains the original hallmarked mount and domed hinged cover. Each cover is ornamented with further applied rivet decoration. The central sterling silver receptacle/stamp box is fitted with a hinged cover, all encompassed with further rivet decorated borders.

The anterior surface of the cover bears the contemporary inscription “Presented to Mr. Charles E Innes, by the Officers and Friends, The Birmingham Sunday Lecture Society as an Appreciation Remembrance of His work as Honorary Secretary of the Society for onwards of Thirteen Years, 10th October 1909”.

The underside of this magnificent inkstand bears an inserted wood base with a green baize covering. Hallmarks attribute the inkstand to John Edward Wilmot, Birmingham, England.
