A polychromed cold-painted bronze pen wipe cast in the form of a sparrow. Set in the bird’s body are densely packed boar’s hair bristles made stiff to clean the nibs of dip pens. They prevented clogging by removing excess ink. Under the bird’s tail feathers is stamped “Geschutzt” – the German equivalent of a patent (“protected”). Attributed to Bergmann.
