Verdun, France was the site of a major battle, the longest-lasting of the First World War. One of the costliest battles in military history, Verdun exemplified the policy of a war of attrition pursued by both sides, which led to an enormous loss of life.

At the center of this souvenir inkstand from Verdun is a peace dove. On either side are the inkwells with lids picturing landmarks. One is the Châtel Gate (Porte de Châtel) and the other is the Victory Monument (Monument de la Victoire). A pen tray in front completes the piece.
