Manufacturer: Derby Silver Co.
The maker’s mark on the base confirms the origin of this set:
- Company History: Established in 1873 in Derby, Connecticut, the firm officially began operations in the borough of Birmingham in 1874.
- The Merger: In 1898, the company became a founding member of the International Silver Company, after which the Derby location was known as “Factory B.”

Description and Components
This set (Pattern #1749) is designed for a large, professional partner’s desk or an upscale home study.
- The Tray: A heavily ornamented four-footed silverplated tray with a decorative repoussé border featuring floral and scrolling motifs.
- The Inkwells: Two stemmed cut-glass inkwells with faceted sides. Each is topped with a hinged silverplated lid decorated with embossed floral patterns.
- The Central Bowl: A small, decorative bowl sits between the two wells. This likely once served as a pen wipe, now missing its wiping material.
- The “Fixed” Slotted Holder: This integrated component with two slots may have served as a pen holder.
Estimated Age
Based on the company markings and the specific “Quadruple Plate” designation, this inkstand was made between 1880 and 1898.
The design reflects the height of late Victorian taste, utilizing heavy floral ornamentation and the “Quadruple Plate” branding which was most aggressively marketed in the late 19th century before the firm was absorbed into the International Silver Company.
