This salt-glazed stoneware inkstand is a testament to the craftsmanship of Westerwald artisans in Germany, circa 1725-1750. The piece is distinguished by its elaborate pierced and reticulated form, creating a visually dynamic surface. Eight “Turk’s Cap” ornaments, inspired by Chinese design, line the top ridge. Delicate engravings of what appear to be parrots add a touch of naturalistic detail to the front and sides. Designed to hold an inkpot (now missing) and a pounce pot (or sander), this inkstand also features a convenient tray for quills.
