This inkstand is shaped like a large, open rose blossom held aloft by its stem. The base is formed by the coiled, thorny stem of the rose. The inkwell itself is hidden within the blossom: the top petals of the rose are hinged and lift to reveal an inner compartment. The inkwell, which would have held ink, is accessible once the petals are opened. This design is highly characteristic of the Victorian era, a time when ornate, nature-themed objects were popular for both their aesthetic and functional qualities.
