Mechanical Design and Functionality

The “snail” revolving inkstand is named for its unique ink reservoir that resembles a snail’s shell. The piece comprises a white porcelain ink font mounted on a raised circular metal base. The base features an intricately cast relief pattern.

Central to the design is the porcelain ink reservoir, shaped like a conch or snail shell. It is designed to pivot around two bearing points within the metal frame. The central pivot points (the “hubs” of the shell) feature decorative brass caps with a knurled or rope-turn border, which ties the porcelain element to the metal frame.

Opening and Closing Mechanism

A key functional feature of this inkwell is its mechanism for sealing the ink. When not in use, the “trumpet”-shaped opening of the porcelain reservoir is sealed by a stopper plate attached to the cast metal bracket. This bracket also incorporates a pen rack.

To access the ink, the reservoir is rotated, causing its open end to pivot away from the stopper plate. The rotation continues until the protrusion contacts the base. At this point, the ink font is fully open and ready for use. When finished, the snail is rotated back to its original position, re-sealing against the stopper plate to prevent ink evaporation and spills.

Aesthetic and Decorative Details

Hand-Painted Porcelain

The white porcelain reservoir is decorated with refined hand-painted overglazed enamels. The sides of the shell are adorned with petite sprays of pink roses and rosebuds, connected by trailing green vines and accented by soft lavender-pink scrolls and swags.

A bold, vertical band runs along the outer curve or “spine” of the reservoir. This band consists of a vibrant emerald-green stripe with serrated, leaf-like edges. Centered within this band is a stylized, symmetrical cartouche in bright orange and dark green. The “trumpet” mouth of the reservoir is finished with a delicate hand-gilded rim.

Metal Base and Frame

The raised circular base is crafted from a patinated copper-alloy. The bottom perimeter is encircled by a cast relief pattern of overlapping laurel leaves. Above this is a wide, fluted or gadrooned section that provides texture and visual weight.

The reservoir is cradled by a cast-metal frame featuring organic, branch-like curves. The top of the bracket bifurcates into a decorative pen rack, allowing a dip pen to rest horizontally above the reservoir.
