This ornate inkstand crafted from 800 grade silver features a central column topped by a mythological figure and flanked by an inkwell and pounce pot. The entire ensemble rests on an elaborate tray with a pierced Greek-key gallery and ball feet.
The fluted, cylindrical column rising from the center of the tray is removable, revealing a hidden storage compartment. Atop the column stands a small, sculpted figure of a mythological being. He is depicted as a young, beardless man with curly hair, holding a wreath in his raised right hand. Based on these attributes, he is likely Apollo, the Greek god of music, poetry, light, and healing. Decoration: Both the inkwell and pounce pot are decorated with bands of intricate ornamentation, including the Greek-key pattern that matches the gallery of the tray.
The underside of the tray bears hallmarks, confirming the silver grade (800). The entire piece is assembled with handmade screws, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. Notably, the nuts of these screws are decorated with floral designs.
