This is a small crystal inkwell with beveled edges and sterling silver hallmarked lid. The inscription says “To Mrs. Pownall, Commandant from the Orange, V.A.D., 8.7.20”. The V.A.D. likely stands for “Voluntary Aid Detachment” – voluntary unit of civilians providing nursing care for military personnel in the United Kingdom. This piece was likely awarded for service in WWI. Hallmarked stamps are letters Y and SN.
