This sterling silver inkwell, hallmarked Birmingham, 1912, T.H. Hazlewood & Co., was presented to Canadian Royal Flying Corps (RFC) ace William George Barker on his 23rd birthday. The inscription on the lid reads:

Capt William Barker MC, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, FROM FELLOW OFFICERS, No. 28 SQN, ROYAL FLYING CORPS, 3RD NOV 1917

William Barker is the most decorated serviceman in Canadian history and was awarded the British Empire’s highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross. To learn about his life: William George Barker – Wikipedia
