This crystal and sterling silver inkwell carries a personal history, likely marking the departure of a Welshman (“Taffy” being the traditional nickname for someone from Wales) from a life or job in Australia back to the UK.

The Maker and Hallmarks

  • Maker: John Grinsell & Sons. The mark is “J.G & S” inside a shield. They were a highly regarded firm based in Birmingham (and later London and Newark), famous for their high-quality silver-mounted glass and “crush-proof” items.
  • City Mark: Anchor (Birmingham).
  • Standard Mark: Lion Passant (Sterling Silver).
  • Date Letter: The lowercase “x” confirms the silver was assayed in 1922.

Note on the Dates: It is very common to see a gap between the hallmark date (1922) and the inscription date (1931). High-quality items like this were often held in a jeweler’s stock for several years before being purchased and engraved for a presentation.

Description

  • The Base: A heavy, brilliant-cut lead crystal block. The square “cube” design features deeply beveled edges that create a prism effect, catching the light. The ink reservoir is bored directly into the center of the crystal.
  • The Mount: A sterling silver “collar” is fitted to the neck of the crystal, topped with a capstan-style hinged lid. The hinge is a classic five-barrel design, built for durability on a busy desk.
  • The Inscription: Hand-engraved in a professional “copperplate” script. The nickname “Taffy” suggests Mr. Jones was a popular figure among his colleagues. This was likely a significant “Bon Voyage” gift as he prepared for a long sea voyage home from Melbourne.
