The inkstand consists of a scalloped-edge tray with beaded edging and intricate floral and scroll patterns etched into its surface. At the center is a multifaceted glass inkwell with a rounded, polished silver lid with an “S” monogram. The stemmed inkwell is set into a circular depression in the middle of the tray. This sterling silver inkstand bears the hallmark of Henry Wilkinson of Sheffield, 1865.
The parishioners of St. Mary Le Strand presented this inkstand in appreciation to Miss Sherley on October 21, 1866. The inscription reads:
St Mary Le Strand – At a meeting of the vestry & of the ratepayers of this parish held in the vestry room on Thursday the 24 day of July 1866, it was resolved that the thanks of the parishioners in vestry assembled be offered to Miss Sherley for her constant and affectionate services in the Sunday School of this parish during twenty four years services the more estimable as having been rendered by a non-parishioner & that a copy of this resolution be presented by the church wardens to Miss Sherley.
