This porcelain double inkstand, in addition to two inkwells, has a pounce pot, a candleholder, and a carrying handle. It is hand painted in gilt and colored enamels with fine flower (peony) painting on the main body. This inkstand was decorated and signed by James Donovan of Dublin. Pieces are marked in original free-hand script.
James Donovan of Dublin was a notable figure in the early 19th century, renowned for his exquisite work on porcelain. His establishment, known as James Donovan & Son, operated as retailers and decorators of porcelain, earning the nickname “The Emperor of China.” They imported “blanks” from English Staffordshire Potteries such as Spode and Minton and decorated them in Dublin.
