Attribution & Authenticity

  • Is this a piece by Jacob Petit? Yes, the stylistic markers strongly support an attribution to the workshop of Jacob Petit (J.P.), active in Paris during the mid-19th century. Jacob Petit was renowned for his flamboyant, highly creative, and luxurious Paris porcelain (porcelaine de Paris) that frequently blended Rococo revival flourishes with naturalistic motifs, vibrant polychrome hand-painted florals, and lavish gilding.
  • Key Diagnostic Elements Matching Jacob Petit:
    • The rich, creamy-yellow (café-au-lait or pale ivory) ground paired with opulent, heavy parcel-gilding.
    • The exuberant, masterfully executed hand-painted botanical sprays (featuring prominent pink roses, purple asters, and delicate blue forget-me-nots) rendered in Petit’s signature vivid palette.
    • Signature sculptural accents, including the finely modeled white-and-gold swan finial, dimensional relief-molded gilt lion head appliqués on the ends, and distinct claw-and-ball or paw feet supporting the base.

Estimated Date of Manufacture

  • Circa 1830–1850 (Charles X / Louis-Philippe Period): Jacob Petit established his independent factory around 1830 (after working as a painter for Sèvres and traveling). The opulent combination of neoclassical architectural proportions (the rectangular sarcophagus or trough body) fused with exuberant Rococo scrolling and rich floral polychrome reaches its peak popularity during the 1830s and 1840s.

Detailed Description

  • Form & Structure: A magnificent and substantial French Paris porcelain desk inkstand of rectangular trough form with softly molded, scalloped rims and gentle paneling. The body is elevated on four ornate, gilt-molded lion’s paw feet underneath, complemented by dimensional gilt lion heads in high relief mounted on either end.
  • Color Palette & Decoration: The entire exterior features a lustrous pale ivory or cream-ground glaze, framed by raised, thick parcel-gilding along the fluted rim and edges. The long sides are hand-painted with a continuous, vibrant polychrome spray of lush garden flowers—showcasing deep pink and blush roses, vivid purple and violet blossoms, tiny blue florets, and delicate green foliage.
  • The Interior & Components:
    • Center Lidded Compartment: The inkstand features a central covered compartment topped by a figural white-and-gold swan finial resting on a stylized, gadrooned shell-and-leaf gilt dome. The lid mirrors the floral motif of the main body. Removing the central lid reveals a deep rectangular well in the center of the base.
    • Side Inserts & Pen Holders: Flanking the central compartment are two circular wells housing removable white porcelain cylindrical liners:
      • One liner features a pierced, domed ceramic pounce pot/shaker insert perforated with delicate holes for sand.
      • The matching inkpot sits opposite, complete with its original domed, gilt-topped lid.
      • Interspersed between the central compartment and the side wells are four built-in circular pen-nib holders ringed in gold.
  • Underside: The base is unglazed white porcelain revealing the fine, dense hard-paste body typical of mid-19th-century Parisian kilns, punctuated by the unglazed square footprints of the four supporting corner feet and central foot mount.
