Philosophers’ Inkstand

This is an ornate and multi-faceted inkwell, combining elements of classical design and philosophical themes. It is composed of several distinct parts:

• Base: A large, circular, and heavily decorated silver base. It features intricate embossed or chased designs, including:
  • Four Medallions: Four circular medallions, each containing a portrait and inscription. These depict:
    • Benjamin Franklin – American polymath and Founding Father.
    • John Locke – Influential English Enlightenment philosopher.
    • Francis Bacon – English philosopher, statesman, and scientist.
    • Michel de Montaigne – French Renaissance philosopher and essayist known for his personal essays.
  • Ornate Floral and Scrollwork: The remaining surface of the base is filled with elaborate floral and scrollwork designs.
  • Raised Center: The center of the base is raised, forming a platform for the inkwell.
• Inkwell: A spherical or bulbous ink reservoir with a cut glass body. The cut glass features a repeating star or diamond design.
  • Silver Mounts: The cut glass body is held in place by metal mounts at the top and bottom. The upper mount forms a neck for the lid.
• Lid: A circular, flat lid with a bas-relief scene. The scene depicts two figures in classical robes and a winged figure, possibly an angel.
