This pewter inkstand is in the form of a flat box with two lifting flaps. One flap covers a long container for storing quills or pens. The other flap covers three compartments, including one for the inkwell and one for the pounce pot. These inkstands are sometimes referred to as “Treasury” inkstands. The name “Treasury” comes from the fact that some silver inkstands of this style were specifically ordered for use in government treasuries during the late 17th century.

This inkstand dates somewhere from the period 1790 to 1820. This inkstand once belonged to Henry Wild who inscribed his name on the inside lid, dating his entry for 1844.
