Double inkstand designed and signed by Danish master decorative metal sculptor Just Andersen (1884–1943). Made of thick pewter, sculpted in a characteristic Scandinavian early Art Deco design with two column-form wells, lidded with detachable lids. Marked and dated on the underside – JUST 1928 DENMARK 857. One original clear blown glass well is retained – note the interesting design. The glass is attached to the pewter body.
Just Andersen (1884-1943) was a Danish decorative sculptor, born in 1884 in Godhavn (Nuuk), Greenland, and studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen before attending the School of Danish Crafts under Jens Møller-Jensen in 1912. After his studies, he worked for Georg Jensen and in 1918 opened his own silversmith studio, Just Andersen Pewter. Works of his are kept in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Museum in Stockholm, among many others.
