In June 1898, Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin began construction of his first airship, LZ-1. Over the next ten years, he continued to improve the Zeppelin until 1908, when he launched the LZ-4 Zeppelin. It was destroyed at the end of a 24-hour endurance flight and was the last of the Count’s Zeppelins. The tail fin on the LZ-4 was one of the Count’s improvements.

The ribbed construction and tail fin on this pewter and bronze Zeppelin are similar in design to the LZ-4. The cast bronze propellers are missing a blade. The hanging gondola is missing. Otherwise, the inkstand is complete.
