Majolica (earthenware) inkstand with pen channel in the shape of a peasant’s thatched cottage.  The roof fits into the bottom with a metal pipe stem, and swivels open to reveal the inkwell.  Marked “Black Forest peasant house, Erphila, Germany”.  While most Erphila is Czech, they are harder to find in German production. The Erphila mark was used on porcelain imported by Eberling & Reuss of Philadelphia, PA.  The import firm operated starting in 1886 and continued into the 1900’s.
