Description
- The Glass Body: The inkwell is crafted from a deep emerald-green glass. Its body is octagonal (eight-sided) with polished vertical facets that taper slightly from the shoulder toward the base.
- The Lid: It features a faceted glass lid, referred to as a “jewel” or “brilliant” cut.
- The Hardware: The lid is attached to the body via a beaded metal collar and hinge.
- The Base: The inkwell is mounted onto a 3-inch square marble base. The total height of the assembly is 3 ¾ inches.
The Marble Identification
Based on the swirling, translucent patterns of cream, tan, and rust-colored veins, the base is made of Onyx Marble (technically a variety of banded calcite).
- Specific Type: This is likely Mexican Onyx or Algerian Onyx.
Age Determination
- Estimated Age: Circa 1890–1915. The combination of deep green glass, beaded metal hardware, and an onyx base points to the Late Victorian or Edwardian periods.
