A French inkwell from the Napoleon III period (mid-19th century), featuring a sophisticated blend of hand-cut crystal and decorative silver-plated metalwork.
The Body and Crystal
The inkwell features a heavy, bulbous clear crystal reservoir with deep, broad facets. The neck of the crystal transitions into a silvered collar with a hinged lid.
The Decorative Mount
The crystal is cradled in a silver-plated brass mount. The metalwork is intricately cast with Baroque-inspired motifs, including:
- Oak leaves and acorns, symbolizing strength and longevity.
- Stylized scrollwork and volutes.
- The piece stands elegantly on ornate scrolled feet (reminiscent of lion paws).
The Lid and Medallion
The domed, silver-plated cap is the centerpiece of the item. It features a finely detailed relief medallion depicting a classical, pastoral scene – a figure (a Muse or a mythological character) seated in a landscape, playing a flute or lyre.
