This inkstand depicts a mother seated on a chair or chaise. She holds a little brown-haired girl on her lap, while a young lad rests against her skirt. The scene is detailed. All their faces are expressive, each having a wistful or tired look. These pieces are hand-painted. The detailing on the clothing is exquisite. The top half lifts off to access the inkwell and sander inside.
Conta Boehme made the same inkstand in different sizes, with different coloring, and with different finishes. Three examples are pictured here.
Example #1 – This is a large version, measuring 7 ⅝” x 3 ⅞” x 8 ¾” high. It has a glazed finish. It sold for $250 in January 2016.
Example #2 – This was made with a Bisque finish. It measures 5 ¾” x 3” x 6 ¾” high. It sold for $139 in February 2016.
Example #3 – This has a glazed finish and is 4 ½” wide and 5” high. It sold for $120 in July 2024.
