Moorcroft Pottery Inkwell – Moonlit Pattern

  • Shape and Structure: The inkwell has a square, slightly rounded-off base with a prominent, domed lid that fits into a circular opening on the top surface.
  • Color and Pattern (Moonlit): The dominant colors are rich, deep blues and lighter, more muted teal/greenish blues, consistent with the “Moonlit” pattern. The design features silhouetted tree forms, primarily in shades of teal or a lighter, more muted blue-green, emerging from a very dark, almost indigo blue background. The glaze has a characteristic mottled appearance, especially noticeable on the trees and the lid, creating an atmospheric, almost ethereal effect, reminiscent of a moonlit landscape.
  • Dip Pen Holes: The top surface of the inkwell features four small, circular holes, one at each corner of the square body, designed to hold dip pens.
  • Lid: The lid is domed and continues the “Moonlit” pattern with similar deep blue and lighter blue/green mottled glazes, blending seamlessly with the body of the inkwell.
  • Material and Glaze: The inkwell is made of pottery, and the glaze appears to be a typical Moorcroft flambé or high-fired glaze, known for its depth and varied coloration.
  • Markings: “Made in England – Moorcroft”
