An inkwell modeled as an upright pinecone with an attached branch forming the pen holder has a lid with a bird perched on top. The inkwell is attached to a circular green leaf tray adorned with leaves and flowers. It bears the Minton mark, shape number 1325.

The Minton company began in 1793 when Thomas Minton founded his pottery factory in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Minton was a leader in ceramic design, working with various ceramic bodies, decorative techniques, and styles.
