This bronze inkstand exemplifies the flowing, organic aesthetics of the Art Nouveau style.
Here’s a detailed description:
- Material and Form: The inkstand is made of bronze and features an asymmetrical, naturalistic design, with a swirling base that transitions seamlessly into the raised section for the inkwell.
- Botanical Decoration: The inkstand is heavily adorned with finely modeled leaves and flowers. The prominent long, slender leaves and bell-shaped flowers are characteristic of lily of the valley (also known as convallaria majalis). These elements are rendered with a graceful, sinuous quality, typical of Art Nouveau’s embrace of natural forms.
- Inkwell and Lid: The inkwell itself is subtly integrated into the raised section of the design, beneath a hinged lid. The lid is also shaped and decorated with organic lines, echoing the floral theme, and blends into the overall sculptural form.
- Pen Channel: In the front of the inkstand’s base, there is a distinct pen channel.
- Signature: The inkstand is signed “A. Bouny”.
