Style & Features
- Design Motif: The piece features several hallmarks of the Neoclassical revival style:
- Lid: A domed lid with a striking sunburst or starburst pattern radiating from the central knob.
- Corners: Four prominent scallop shells (or clam shells) anchor the top corners.
- Sides: The body is decorated with draped garlands and swags, which appear to be laurel or acanthus leaves tied with delicate ribbon bows.
- Material: While it has the appearance of solid bronze (often referred to as an “ormolu” finish), Jennings Brothers typically cast these pieces in a high-quality white metal (spelter) which was then copper-plated and finished with a gold or bronze patina to give it a heavy, luxurious feel.
- Insert: The clear glass liner is present.
Estimated Age
This piece dates to the early 20th century, likely between 1900 and 1920. During this period, Jennings Brothers produced a wide variety of these “bronzed” desk sets that were popular for their durability and elegant, classic designs.
