This metal inkwell with a cobalt blue glass insert was produced by Kronheimer & Oldenbusch (K&O Co.), a prominent American manufacturer of desk novelties.

Physical Description

  • Design: The inkwell features a cylindrical body with an ornate floral motif, specifically cherry blossoms, which are prominently etched or embossed on the lid and the flared base.
  • Material: While it has the appearance of bronze or copper, these pieces were typically made of plated white metal (spelter) or coppered metal with a dark, hand-rubbed patina.
  • Internal Component: It contains its original removable cobalt blue glass reservoir, a signature color used by K&O for their high-end desk accessories.
  • Marking: The small stamped symbol on the underside consists of the initials “K&O Co.”.

About the Manufacturer: Kronheimer & Oldenbusch

  • Identity: Often referred to as K&O Co. or the K. & O. Novelties Company, the firm was founded in 1890.
  • Location: The company was based in Brooklyn, New York, and its factory was known for producing a wide variety of metal “art goods,” including bookends, ashtrays, jewelry caskets, and complete desk sets.
  • Legacy: K&O reached the height of its popularity during the Arts and Crafts and Art Deco eras. They specialized in high-quality souvenirs and decorative items that were sold in fine stationery and department stores across the United States.

Based on the “cherry blossom” design and the specific K&O hallmark, this inkwell was manufactured circa 1910–1925.
