While history informs us that Joan of Arc cropped her hair and dressed in men’s clothing, this inkstand, perhaps in homage to her martyrdom and sainthood, depicts Joan with her hair flowing out from her helmet. Cast in metal and resting on a square alabaster base, the hinged helmet opens to access the inkwell.
Pictures of a second version added 4/17/25: a bust of Joan of Arc that features an ornate helmet with decorative engravings and articulated cheek guards. The hinged top of the helmet lifts to reveal the original glass inkwell insert, securely fitted inside. The figure’s armor is highlighted with hand-painted gold and green details, contrasting with the metallic surface. A curved element at the back of the helmet adds to its sculptural appeal.
Sold for $150 in February 2024; Sold for $212 in April 2025 (no alabaster base)
Bust with painted face sold for $167 in March 2025
