This is a bronze Yatate from the Meiji era (1880 – 1900). The Yatate is a traditional Japanese portable writing set, often used by travelers and scholars. The cylindrical container is intricately etched with patterns of waves or geometric shapes. The container has a hinged lid that opens to reveal the ink compartment. Accompanying the Yatate is a Fude brush.
