This is a Japanese wooden Yatate from the mid-1800s (Meiji). The Yatate was a traveling scribe’s or artist’s case, with an inkwell at one end and a long shaft for holding tools and brushes. It was often worn on the sash of a robe. The wood on this piece is decorated in gold lacquer with flowers. Inside, the tools all have matching handles with a gold fleck lacquer finish.
