This inkwell is of a Japanese water dragon or legendary serpent-like creature called ‘Mizuchi’.
From Japanese Mythology (including Shinto and Yokai traditions), the Mizuchi is a water dragon or serpent that has the ability to control water. Often portrayed as guardian deities of rivers and bodies of water.
Made of pot metal and painted to give the look of antiquity.
This example has a small chip in the left jaw.
The original glass ink cup insert is intact
