This copper inkstand with a textured, hammered surface from J & F Poole of Hayle has an inkwell, two pen holders, and a letter holder marked “Post” and “In – Out.” The design is intricate, with a hammered texture on the copper surface. The inkwell, embossed with a spade-shaped decoration, is centrally placed. There are hooks to hold pens on either side.

The company was founded by brothers James and Frederick Pool in 1862, building on their father’s business established in 1848. Initially, they produced plumbing services, tinware, and tools for the local community and the Cornish mines. Over time, they expanded their product range to include decorative copperware, such as inkwells, trays, and fire screens. Their copperware was known for its hand-hammered finish, although some pieces were made using machines and then hand-finished.
